Museum of the Order of St John
Design, Content Development and Architecture
We masterplanned, renovated and redisplayed this Museum in its medieval Gatehouse to tell an epic history- from crusading knights to St John’s Ambulance – for a mixed audience of locals, tourists and children.
We worked with the client on all the interpretation and text, laid out the content in space, designed the gallery displays, showcases and low-tech interactives, and brought in illustrators for the children’s interpretation. We were also the lead architect, collaborating with conservation architects Donald Insull Associates. We cleared out an old lightwell to create a central space; used the fabric of the building, including the old windows and medieval openings, for displays; and designed a glass roof that allowed an uninterrupted view of the medieval walls inside this listed building.
The new museum opened in 2010.
