Wordsworth Trust

The Wordsworth Trust asked Metaphor to masterplan the hamlet of New End, on the edge of Grassmere in Cumbria. This small hamlet, which is home to the Wordsworth Museum and Jerwood Centre, was where William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy passed their most productive years as poet and writer.

We looked at the challenge both from practical angles (car parking, visitor routes, how the welcome unfolds) and conceptually (what does the museum want to tell us, who are the visitors, how to lay out the galleries, how should the Jerwood Centre work?). We looked at the audience groups, both current and potential, and analysed possible revenue streams. We also analysed the current uses of all the buildings in the hamlet of New End and, where relevant, proposed new ones.

The end result is a masterplan that proposes improvements to this visitor destination from every angle; physical, conceptual, operational and financial.
