Chetham’s Library is a rare group of surviving medieval buildings in the middle of Manchester, whose remarkable story stretches from the Elizabethan philosopher John Dee to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. We were asked to deliver a set of options on how to adapt the listed spaces around Chetham’s Library so that they function as a Visitor Experience for a new programme of events and learning and for a new generation of visitors, including those aged between 20 and 30.  One of our recommendations was that Chetham’s makes better use of the adjacent school building designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse. We also looked at developing the outside landscape for visitors to use.
