'Steam, Steel and Submarine' Gallery, Chatham Historic Dockyard

We were asked to redesign the ‘Steam, Steel and Submarine’ Gallery on the ground floor of the Grade I listed Fitted Rigging House at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham.

We used our extensive experience in value engineering, recycling and upcycling to create a compelling, exciting exhibition within budget, prioritising key costs and cutting where necessary without sacrificing on quality.

We played to the strengths of the gallery and developed a language of playful illustration, especially on the graphic panels and labels, many of which were conceived so that they were entirely pictorial. These have been hugely popular with families and children and ex-service personnel bringing their grandchildren to visit, successfully drawing in key target audiences for the museum.
